bitingly So. It’s begun. All the philosophising and carpe diems are said and done, and now I’m left with the small matter of actually cycling this mother. I’d stayed at my friend Frank’s pad in Earlsfield after the cluster fuck that was my fourth and final leaving drinks – and was happy it was him and his girlfriend with the job of saying the final farewells. They took it like absolute champs. Not a tear between them…! We did however squeeze in the time to shave my head before the big off. This is a world exclusive people so enjoy.
Concórdia So off I went carrying the unfeasibly heavy burden of a 50kg bike and panniers with me. Added to my already substantial ‘muscular’ frame that’s around 150kg that my legs are constantly reminding me they’re not happy about. I figure that either my body or panniers will start shedding pounds sooner rather than later. Best UK online casinos list updated in May 2019. Expert reviews of the best casino sites for UK players. The first day was a 55 mile route over the South Downs of England to the coast and ferry at Newhaven. Within 5 miles I was visiting the first of many bike shops since, rather worryingly, my front wheel kept threatening to fall off. New skewer installed, it quickly became obvious that I was cruising around town with a massive conversation starter in tow. On a number of occasions people stopped me on the side of the road to find out where I was off to with all my worldly belongings.
It took about 8 hours before arriving into Newhaven. I was expecting the glitz and glamour of a seaside town. Kent’s answer to Blackpool Tower maybe. What I was greeted by – was an absolute shithole. The high street looked empty and boarded up like a duelling backroad from a Western at one minute to high noon. Fearing for my life after popping my head into the friendliest looking pub in town (think ‘far-right party conference’) I beat a path for a McDonalds safe haven and laid low until the ferry arrived.
I hadn’t factored in the hour’s time difference so was surprised to hear I’d be woken at effectively 2:20am, when I’d only boarded at 10:30pm. Once we got under way and the strong waves kicked my seasickness into action I knew there was no way I was getting any sleep so braced myself for another long day of cycling in the next few hours.
The French side is dominated by the ‘Avenue Verte’ – a private cycling route that follows a disused railway line most of the way to Paris. Cycling bliss I hear you say, but what with the ridiculous start time the first 3 hours were completed under the cover of darkness, rape alarm in hand… Unfortunately due to being such a bloody lad I’d decided to spend the night in Beauvais and check out the cathedral I’d read about which meant leaving the flat green godsend and instead braving the winds and rolling hills of North France for the last 30 miles. This turned out to be a mistake and after some wrong turnings and never ending hills my second day on no sleep lasted 10.5 hours. I finally arrived in the late afternoon absolutely shattered, down, depressed and doubting whether I’ll just have to give it all in in a few days. However a few kind words from friends, a shower, sleep and huge KFC started to pick me back up again. I’ve decided to take the next day off and to shorten the distances in these early days until the body is better prepared. I always knew the beginning would be tough and so it has turned out.
